Bundesliga Format Made Simple

The 18 teams play in a double round-robin format, with a total of 34 matchdays. Each team plays 34 matches - facing the other 17 teams twice, once at home and once away.

A win gives 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss 0 points.

At the end of season, the team with highest total points becomes the Bundesliga champion and lifts the shiny "salad plate" trophy.

How Does Promotion & Relegation Work in the Bundesliga?

The bottom two teams in Bundesliga (17th and 18th place) are directly relegated to the 2. Bundesliga (second division).

The team finishes 16th plays a relegation playoff against the 3rd place team from the 2. Bundesliga - the winner stays in the Bundesliga, the loser goes down.
