If you ask in India, “What’s the most classic family game?” almost everyone will answer: “Ludo!”

Curious about how online Ludo works? 🎲 Well, rolling the dice is just the first step!

We’re breaking down the Ludo game rules and how to win in the simplest way possible. And guess what? You can play real-money Ludo for just ₹1 — let’s dive in!

What is Ludo? Where does it come from?

Ludo is a popular board game in India — both in real life and online. It’s a true national game, loved by all ages, evolving from physical boards to digital screens!

But Ludo isn’t some modern invention — its origins can be traced back to ancient India, and even the emperors were hooked on it! 😍

Ludo History Timeline

The original version of Ludo was called Pachisi, and it originated in India around the 6th century CE.

This game was played by four players, and instead of dice, cowrie shells were used to determine the number of moves.

  • Pachisi is often referred to as the "National Game of India."
  • It was even played in the royal courts of Akbar the Great, who had a giant board built into the floor for the royal family to play on!

During British colonial rule, the British brought the game back to Europe, simplified and modernized it — and that’s how Ludo, as we know it today, was born.

1 minutes guide - how to play Ludo!

  1. Each online Ludo game can have up to 4 players.
  2. Players can choose from four token colors: 🟢 Green / 🔵 Blue / 🔴 Red / 🟡 Yellow.
  3. At the start of the game, one player is randomly selected to go first.
  4. Each player has 4 tokens of their chosen color. The first player to move all 4 tokens to the finish zone wins the game.
  5. The game uses 1 dice to determine the number of steps to move.
  6. You must roll a 6 to move a token out from the "home" area.
  7. Once a token is out of home, it is placed at the starting point (the square with a ⭐ star).
  8. After successfully bringing a token out, you get an extra roll and can move again.
  9. Each token must make a full round around the board, then enter the center triangle area, which is the finish zone.
  10. The player who gets all 4 tokens to the finish zone first is the winner!

Simply put, the basic rule of online Ludo is this:

  • Each player has 4 tokens of the same color. You roll the dice to decide how many steps to move.
  • The first player to move all 4 tokens into the triangle-shaped finish zone wins!
  • If your token lands on a safe zone (the square marked with a ⭐ star), it won’t get kicked back home — even if another player lands there.
  • Two tokens of different colors can share the same safe spot!
💡
But if you keep failing to roll a 6, your token can’t leave the "home" area — so getting that 6 is key to getting started!

Why do you need to roll a 6 to move your token out in Ludo?

The rule of needing a 6 to start comes from the original Pachisi game.
Rolling a 6 symbolizes the starting threshold.

— a way to represent overcoming an obstacle or beginning a journey.

Ludo is adapted from the ancient Indian game Pachisi, which dates back to the 6th century. In the past, players used cowrie shells or dice to determine how many steps to move.

When can you roll the dice again and again in Ludo?

  1. Rolling a 6:
    - Whether you're using it to bring a token out of home or to move forward, you'll get an extra roll.
  2. Sending an opponent's token home:
    - Successfully kicking another player's token gives you one extra roll.
  3. Reaching the finish zone:
    - If a token enters the triangle-shaped finish path or the final center zone, you also earn an extra roll.

What happens if you roll three 6s in a row?

In Ludo, if a player rolls three consecutive 6s, that entire turn is invalidated — you can’t move any tokens, and it’s immediately the next player’s turn.

This rule prevents players from gaining an unfair advantage by repeatedly rolling 6s.

Where are the safe zones in Ludo?

Safe zones are the squares marked with a ⭐ star — your "life-savers" where your tokens can’t be kicked!

  1. The first square after exiting home (the starting point with a star)。
  2. All star-marked squares scattered along the main path.
  3. Each player has a triangle-shaped finish path with six same-colored tiles leading to the center.

This path is exclusive to the player and also counts as a safe zone.

Can you block your opponent in Ludo?

Yes — there's one specific situation where you can block opponents.

When two or more of your own tokens (same color) land on the same square, they form a temporary "invincible fortress."

Opponents cannot land on or pass through this square — their movement gets completely blocked!

In this case, your opponent must either move a different token, or if no legal moves are available, they have to skip their turn.

Place two of your tokens on the same square to block opponents — that spot becomes off-limits, making it a strong defensive move.
