On May 25th this year, the cricketing mecca, Eden Gardens, will host the IPL final, which is also the home ground of last season's IPL champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders. Let's take a look at what makes this stadium special and revisit the venues of past IPL finals!

Venues of Past IPL Finals

As of January 2025, IPL finals have been held in 9 different venues across these cities: Johannesburg, South Africa; Dubai, UAE; Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Navi Mumbai, India.

MACS－Chennai

MA Chidambaram Stadium has hosted the IPL finals 3 times in 2011, 2012, and 2024, making it the stadium with the most IPL finals to date. It is also the home ground of the 5-time champions, CSK. Interestingly, their first championship was won at this very stadium in 2011!

The stadium can accommodate 50,000 people and is the second oldest cricket ground in India, established in 1916 with over a century of history.

Notably, the stadium was renamed in 1986 to honor the significant contributions of the former president of the cricket association, M. A. Chidambaram! The name changed from Madras Cricket Club Ground to MA Chidambaram Stadium.

EG - Kolkata

Eden Gardens in Kolkata is the oldest cricket ground in India. Built in 1864, it boasts over 160 years of history. It also became the venue for the first-ever World Cup final held in India in 1987. Before the World Cup, it could accommodate 40,000 people, and was expanded to 100,000.

Later, due to the standards for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, it was upgraded and renovated, reducing the seating capacity to 68,000. Unfortunately, the renovations weren't completed on time, resulting in the cancellation of the World Cup group matches and finals scheduled there.

Last season's IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, call this stadium their home ground. It has hosted the IPL finals in 2013 and 2015.

Eden Gardens is the first stadium specially built for cricket and is often hailed as the "Mecca" of Indian cricket.

DYPS - Navi Mumbai

DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai is one of the home grounds of the Mumbai Indians. It hosted the inaugural IPL final in 2008 and the third final in 2010.

Completed in 2008, it can accommodate 45,300 people and boasts advanced facilities. The stadium also frequently hosts events and concerts.

On December 15, 2019, U2 performed in India for the first time, marking the final stop of their Joshua Tree Tour 2019. In 2023, American rapper 50 Cent held a concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of "Get Rich or Die Tryin."

More importantly, global music icon Coldplay will bring their Music of the Spheres World Tour to India on January 18th, 19th, and 21st in 2025, creating a historic event.

NMS - Ahmedabad

Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, originally named the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cricket Stadium, was established in 1983. It was completely demolished and rebuilt in 2015, with the new stadium completed in 2020.

In the same year, the 45th President of the United States, Donald John Trump, visited India for the "Namaste Trump" event held at this stadium.

In 2021, it was renamed after India's 14th Prime Minister, Narendra Damodardas Modi. It is the largest cricket stadium in the world, with a capacity of 132,000 spectators.

It is also the home ground of the IPL team Gujarat Titans. During the IPL final in 2022, it set a record with 100,000 attendees and saw the Gujarat Titans win the IPL championship. The stadium continued to host the IPL final again in 2023 and was also the venue for the 2023 ICC World Cup final.

MCS - Bangalore

M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore is the home ground of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). It held its first test match in 1974 and can accommodate 40,000 people.

It is the world's first eco-friendly stadium, using solar panels and setting an example for sports venues worldwide. It has also hosted the IPL finals in 2014 and 2016.

RGICS - Hyderabad

Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad is the home ground of the IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad, with a seating capacity of 55,000. It hosted the IPL finals in 2017 and 2019.

Often referred to as the Uppal Stadium, it was initially named Visakha International Cricket Stadium after Visaka Industries Limited won the bidding for ₹650 million in 2004.

In 2005, Andhra Pradesh's 14th Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, renamed it to honor India's 6th Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

WHS - Mumbai

Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai hosted India's first test match in 1933. It can accommodate 33,100 spectators and is one of the few cricket grounds in India located by the sea!

It is one of the home grounds of the Mumbai Indians (MI). Wankhede Stadium witnessed the 2011 Cricket World Cup final, where India beat Sri Lanka to win their first World Cup in 28 years, making India the first country to win the World Cup on home soil! The stadium also hosted the IPL final in 2018.

DICS－Dubai

Dubai International Cricket Stadium, also known as Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium, was established in 2009. It can accommodate 25,000 people, with a maximum capacity of 30,000.

It was one of the venues used by the IPL during the COVID-19 pandemic, witnessing the Mumbai Indians (MI) win their fifth title in 2020 (a historic high and a successful title defense) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) securing their fourth title in 2021.

The stadium also hosted the semi-finals and final of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, where Australia won their first T20 World Cup title, and New Zealand made their first appearance in a T20 World Cup final.

Wanderers Stadium in South Africa was established in 1956. After being renovated in 2002, it was renamed New Wanderers Stadium, although it is still commonly referred to as Wanderers Stadium.

This venue is also known as "The Bullring" due to its circular structure and lively crowd. During matches, the energetic crowd creates a deafening roar, making it feel like you're in a fierce bullring!
