For players who are new to this game, understanding the basic rules is very important.
In this guide, we will explain in detail how to play online roulette and the differences between European, French, and American roulette, helping you get started quickly and giving you a chance to win this exciting game.
Roulette is a popular casino gambling game. The term "Roulette" comes from the French word meaning "little wheel".
The game typically features 37 or 38 numbered slots on a spinning wheel. The dealer spins the wheel and releases a small ball that lands on one of the numbered slots, and the number where the ball lands is the winning number.
In online casino games, there are three main types of roulette: American, European, and French roulette. Here are their basic differences:
Features / Versions | European Roulette | American Roulette | French Roulette |
---|---|---|---|
Betting Numbers | 37 numbers (0–36) | 38 numbers (0–36, 00) | 37 numbers (0–36) |
Colors | 0 is green | 0 and 00 are green | 0 is green |
Ball Size | Standard | Standard | Slightly larger |
House Edge | 2.7% | 5.26% | 1.35% |
Popular Regions | Europe, Asia, etc. | Primarily in North America | Primarily in Europe |
Online roulette uses the international standard single-zero wheel, which consists of 37 narrow slots. One green slot is numbered 0, while the remaining 36 slots are numbered 1 to 36, with half in red and half in black.
Players can bet on individual numbers or combinations of numbers on the betting table.
After the betting ends, the dealer spins the roulette wheel in one direction and then throws an ivory-colored ball onto the outer edge of the wheel.
The ball must rotate at least three full laps on the wheel before the game is considered valid, and it will land in one of the numbered pockets, determining the result of the round.
If the ball does not complete three full laps, the round will be restarted.
Chips are placed on the betting table, which has different sections for various bet types. You can place your bet on any of these sections, but you must do so within the betting time limit.
There are 12 types of betting options in Roulette. Since the French betting layout is essentially a variation of the American layout, its odds correspond to the American layout.
Therefore, the payout odds are based on the American version. The various betting types and their corresponding payout odds are as follows:

You need to decide the amount you wish to win, for example, ₹1000. It’s recommended to set a conservative amount to avoid exhausting too much of your bankroll.
You can divide this amount into smaller numbers, such as splitting ₹1000 into ₹100, ₹200, ₹400, ₹100, and ₹200.
Select the numbers on the far left and far right of your sequence to form a combination. Based on the sequence mentioned above, you would pick 100 and 200. Therefore, your first bet amount would be 300 rupees.
Choose even-money betting options such as Red/Black, Odd/Even, or 1-18/19-36, and place a bet of 300 rupees.
If you win the round, remove the leftmost and rightmost numbers from the sequence.
Based on the example above, your sequence should now be 200, 400, 100. Repeat the second step, and this time your bet will be 300 rupees.
If you lose this round, do not remove any numbers from the sequence. Instead, add the bet amount (300 rupees) to the right side of the sequence.
The sequence should now be 200, 400, 100, 300. Repeat the second step, and this time your bet will be 500 rupees.
Continue following the steps above until all the numbers in the sequence are crossed out, which means you have reached your target win amount.
If you experience multiple consecutive losses, it is advisable not to blindly increase your bets; know when to stop. Similarly, when you win several rounds in a row if you encounter a loss, it's recommended to pause temporarily to preserve your profits.

The Martingale strategy is a betting strategy used to recover previous losses.
The core idea is that each time you lose a round, you double your bet. The theory behind this is that if you eventually win at roulette, you will not only recover all your previous losses but also earn a profit equal to your initial bet.
Below is an example of using the Martingale strategy in roulette betting:
Spin | Bet Color | Bet Amount | Game Result | Single Round Profit | Cumulative Total Profit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Red | 100 rupees | Lose | -100 rupees | -100 rupees |
2 | Red | 200 rupees | Lose | -200 rupees | -300 rupees |
3 | Red | 400 rupees | Lose | -400 rupees | -700 rupees |
4 | Red | 800 rupees | Win | +800 rupees | +100 rupees |
5 | Red | 100 rupees | Lose | -100 rupees | 0 rupees |
