LPL 2025 won’t happen this year as SLC shifts its focus to T20 World Cup 2026 preparations.
No stress, bro.
Here’s everything you need to know plus 5 awesome T20 leagues you can watch instead right now.🏏
Why Was the LPL 2025 Schedule Postponed?
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) made the difficult decision to postpone the Lanka Premier League 2025 season on October 22, 2025.
The postponement was necessary to prioritize preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which Sri Lanka will co-host with India in February-March 2026.
Key Reasons for Postponement
- Three major cricket venues need extensive upgrades to meet ICC standards.
– R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (Colombo)
– Pallekele International Cricket Stadium
– Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium - Limited ResourcesRunning LPL 2025 would stretch resources needed for World Cup preparations, risking the quality of both events.
- ICC ComplianceAll World Cup venues must meet strict international broadcasting, facility, and safety standards – requiring focused attention.
When Will Lanka Premier League Return?
The most likely window is August-September 2026. SLC has assured fans that LPL remains a priority and will return stronger once World Cup obligations are fulfilled.
While Sri Lanka Cricket has not announced a new date, the tournament is expected to resume after the T20 World Cup 2026 concludes.

Star Players in LPL History
The Lanka Premier League has featured some of cricket’s biggest names over the years. Here are the types of players that have made LPL special:
Explosive Hitters🔥
International power-hitters have been a major draw in LPL history. Here are examples of the explosive batting talent the league has showcased:
- Alex Hales – England’s T20 ignition key. When he connects, the ball’s usually landing in the stands before bowlers even settle.
- Glenn Phillips– New Zealand’s versatile all-rounder brings 360° shot-making ability and can dominate any bowling attack.
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz – Afghanistan’s fearless young opener has made his mark in international T20 cricket with explosive powerplay performances.

These three are pure entertainment – expect sixes, high strike rates, and plenty of momentum shifts.
Death-Over Specialists 🎯
LPL has featured some of the world’s best finishers – bowlers who thrive under pressure in the crucial final overs:
- Matheesha Pathirana – Sri Lanka’s “Baby Malinga” has become one of the most exciting young pace bowlers in world cricket, with his unique slinging action and toe-crushing yorkers.
- Wanindu Hasaranga – The spin magician. Rips through middle overs, flips matches, and then walks out swinging like a finisher.

When the pressure peaks, these two are the ultimate closers – capable of shutting down chases or stealing wins from the brink.
Local Talents on the Rise🌱
LPL has served as a platform for emerging Sri Lankan talent to showcase their abilities on the big stage:
- Avishka Fernando – Fearless from ball one. Loves clearing infield gaps and making bowlers regret every loose length.
- Dunith Wellalage – Young, sharp, composed. Knows when to strike, when to steady — the kind of player every team wants for the future.

Both bring that X-factor – early aggression and all-round versatility – to keep the season unpredictable and electric.
