Why does the T20 format always get cricket fans so excited and keep them staying up all night? A T20 match only has 2 innings, and the game is completed in about 3 hours, unlike test matches, which can take up to 5 days to see a result.
Here’s a simple guide to the T20 format and rules, along with the 2025 T20 schedule for the India national team and where to place your bets.
T20, also known as Twenty20, refers to each team playing only 20 overs. Each match takes about 3.5 hours. This format is very popular nowadays because of its quick results.
Lots of famous cricket tournaments around the world use the T20 format, like the IPL, T20 World Cup, and Bilateral T20I Series, etc.
After the 2002 Benson & Hedges Cup, the ECB wanted to introduce a cricket format with a shorter duration, the one that could produce a result in a single day, in order to attract more fans
At that time, ECB's marketing manager, Stuart Robertson, suggested implementing a limit of 20 overs per team, and this proposal was adopted the following year.
The first T20 match was held in 2003 in the UK, and it quickly gained global popularity, becoming the foundation for major tournaments like the IPL and the T20 World Cup.
England and Wales Cricket Board EBC, founded in 1997, it is responsible for organizing and promoting the development of cricket in the UK, managing competitions, handling international affairs, and overseeing all cricket-related matters. It is also a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
In T20, two teams compete against each other, with each team consisting of 11 players (including batsmen, bowlers, and fielders). The match has 2 innings, with each team playing 20 overs. Each over consists of 6 legal balls. If all 10 batsmen are out, the teams will switch between batting and fielding.
The T20 format only allows for one 10-minute break between innings. Each team must complete their 20 overs within 85 minutes, and exceeding this time will result in additional penalties.
Super Over will be played once the game ends in a tie. Each team will face one over (6 balls), and the team with the higher score will be declared the winner."
There is no difference between T20 and T20I. The main distinction lies in:
T20 refers to domestic (regional) competitions, such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League, and others.
T20I refers to international matches (T20 International), such as the ICC T20 World Cup, T20 Tri-Nation Series, etc. Only ICC member countries are eligible to participate in T20I events.
Apart from T20, there are two other formats, T10 and The Hundred have an even faster pace.
T10: Each team only has 10 overs (60 balls), making it the shortest format of the game, usually finishing in around 1 hour.
The Hundred: Introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board, each team plays 100 balls per match. Games typically conclude within two hours.
6 runs: The ball does not touch the ground and goes directly over the boundary.
4 runs: The ball touches the ground before rolling over the boundary.
1 run: The batter successfully runs to the opposite crease.
1 run: The bowler delivers a no-ball, which could occur if the ball is above the shoulder height, outside the batter’s reach, or if the bowler oversteps the crease.
Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 4 overs (24 balls), ensuring that all bowlers in the team have an opportunity to bowl.
